The Glorious North today released their new single ‘The Widow’, taken from their debut album ‘Welcome to the Glorious North’. The Melbourne-based quartet may describe their sound as ‘slacker country’ but make no mistake, there’s nothing but hard work behind their tracks, the narratives they tell and their live performances. After all, the band formed when they were sick of drinking in bars and decided they should be playing and drinking in bars instead, and that level of multitasking has never really appealed to supposed slackers.
‘The Widow’ is a twist on the murder-ballad theme. It’s told from the perspective of the murderer, a man who has killed for love, and as the story unfolds it’s revealed that his would-be lover, who put him up to it and is now free in every sense of the world, has manipulated him. At its most basic, the boys say, ‘it’s a lesson to think carefully before killing folks. And then it’s so much more’.
The single was recorded and produced by Dave Rogers, a man of many talents whom regularly tours as part of Ben Lee’s band. Recording at the Channel Studio in Southbank, Melbourne, was a ‘super-cool experience’ for the band. ‘It lives in the bowels of Hamer Hall,’ they said, ‘and when you open up the curtains you get a magnificent view of Melbourne from across the Yarra River.’ They were looking north, of course, back towards the northern suburbs from which they proudly took their name.

The Glorious North’s versatility and approachability means their music can be equally enjoyed by a packed pub crowd on a Friday night or by 5,000 people at the Beer InCider Experience in Brisbane. They’ve also played festival slots at the Tamworth Country Music Festival and the Fat Yak BBQ Festival in Melbourne, and toured the east coast and country Victoria in support of past releases.
With airplay increasing both at home and abroad, The Glorious North are starting to look just a little more glorious and though the message of ‘The Widow’ is to think carefully before killing things, it’s obvious that this does not apply to the band’s attitude towards music. They’ll be killing it at a pub or festival near you following this release, so buy them a beer or four.
