Milwaukee punk quartet DIRECT HIT! are headed to Australia for the first time ever this week on a string of East Coast shows from Brisbane to Melbourne, and nearly everywhere in between!
Mr Rogue caught up with vocalist/guitarist Nick Woods over the weekend for a quick Q&A.
After 3 albums and a thousand EP’s, you guys are headed to Australia for your first ever headline tour Down Under. What took you guys so fucking long to come down here and play for your Aussie fans!?!?
Fucking plane tickets dude! I have a wife and a kid and a mortgage, I can’t afford to fly to new and exotic places unless someone else foots the bill these days. Australia is without a doubt the farthest we have ever been from home. It just took a while to figure out how to pay for the trip.
Can you pinpoint the moment when you said to yourself “This is what I want to do with my life”?
My mom bought me a guitar when I was 12, and for the first time I could play The Black Album by Metallica. All my friends and I were into radio metal at the time, and the fact that I could make it myself was pretty unreal.
‘Wasted Mind’, your first album with the Home of Punk, Fat Wreck Chords, has been a massive success. Congrats! Was your writing process different to any of your previous recordings?
We get more collaborative as a band with every album we make. So in that way it was a little bit different, but not really other than that. We write what we write, you know? We don’t go somewhere as a group on the beach or in the woods and write in a cabin. From time to time, one of us just gets a melody in their head, and picks up a guitar, and then shows it to the group, we all write parts that sound good around whatever that dude has, and then we go from there.
Any plans in the works for a follow up to ‘Wasted Mind’ yet?
We’ve been demoing material for the last few months at a friend’s place in Milwaukee, and start work on a new album in November.
'Paid In Brains'
You have toured with the biggest and the best bands on the planet. If you could pick just one band to tour with again for the rest of your lives, who would it be and why?
It’s hard to not be excited about the idea of touring with NOFX again. I dunno if we’ll ever get to do it. But I hope so. That was the first big support tour we ever got to do, and it meant a lot to be able to hang out with that group.
Have you any horror stories from life on the road?
More than I can recount here. We tried sleeping on a wood floor covered in soil in Trenton, NJ once, and when Danny couldn’t take it anymore, he went outside to sleep in the van, and watched a bum take a shit on the grass next to the curb, and then stuff his ass with fallen leaves and trash off the ground in lieu of wiping.
What can fans expect from your live show?
Lots of sweat. Lots of bad stage banter. Lots of panting and off-key melody.
What do you want to see from the Aussie crowds when your tour kicks off this time next week?
If you all could sing the words to my songs so I don’t have to, that’d be fucking great.
