Apate pull no punches from the get go with their brand new EP ‘Spit You Out’.
As brutal at they come, the opening tracks ‘Fugue’ and ‘Bone Syndrome’ serve up a delicious offering of the biggest breakdowns and almost violent vocals for an entrée that belongs on an album 15 years into a band’s career…not a band who are releasing their second EP.
‘Split’, ‘Hangman’ and the title track ‘Spit You Out’ prove more than enough for the main course, with ‘Spit You Out’ shining a light on a more melodic side of the band, which is surprisingly good for such a heavy band that does not utilize a ‘cleans’ vocalist.
‘Jackal’ and ‘Bitter Pill’ round out an extremely well-polished EP from these Brisbane locals, with ‘Jackal’ being our pick off the EP. I can just see the mayhem in the pit that this one will bring. I’ve got goose bumps with anticipation. These guys just have that sound that is made for the live arena.
There is something familiar, yet vastly different about Apate’s sound. There is almost a ‘ Old School Nu-Metal’ sound that is buried beneath the complex chunky-as-fuck down-tuned Djent style guitars that mixes in well with the vicious growls and vocal abilities of singer Zakk Ludwig, who at times channels his inner Jonathan Davis to perfection.
Mix in some unbelievably tight drums and you have the perfect blend of hardcore goodness.
This EP has set the benchmark for the genre in my eyes. Good luck to all those who attempt to better it.
