"It can't rain all the time".
Well last night, it did.....ALOT.
After some early concerns regarding flash flooding last night @ Randwick, The Roundhouse opened it's doors for the last time for 12 or so months to a very eager crowd of wet metalheads. (The Roundhouse is getting a full renovation....but it will be back, better than ever!)
Western Sydney Metalers TENSIONS ARISE graced a small, yet eager crowd to open the night.
Their unique sound was very hard to pigeon hole them into a particular sound. Kazzy Kage's vocals for instance....One part Dez Fafara (DevilDriver Dez more than Coal Chamber Dez) mixed with a dash of Max Cavalera. TENSIONS ARISE were full of energy & the theatrics by all band members made this short, yet lively set definitely worth the wait in the rain for all those who braved the atrocious conditions.
2016 looks to be their career defining year too, with already supporting Sevendust earlier this year, now they are opening for Fear Factory. Throw in Drowning Pool for good measure in August.....our local boys are doing alright!
Melbournians CIRCLES were a HUGE surprise for me. My only exposure to these guys was a random YouTube clip that followed a Porcupine Tree video that I was watching a while back.
I can now say that I am a BIG fan. These guys really blew me away.
Technical, yet kind of elegant at the same time. And POWERFUL vocals! WOW!!!
I was not too sure how a Prog style band would fit in to such a "straight down the line, what you see is what you get" industrial metal sound like Fear Factory.....but fuck me it worked!
It wasn't long until they had the pit thriving with energy....it seemed as if the crowd quadrupled by the time the first few songs had been thrown down. Testament to the power that CIRCLES delivered.
I can't recommend these guys highly enough.
Wherever they are playing next....just go. You will not regret it.
After what seemed like forever, and countless chants of "FEAR FACTORY....FEAR FACTORY....FEAR FACTORY" the LA veteran metal masters made their way to centre stage......and BANG!
It was lucky that this was the last show at this iconic Sydney venue as we know it.
FEAR FACTORY tore the place to shreds (metaphorically of course!) in arguably their tightest career-spanning set that our fine city has seen.
Opening with "Demanufacture" was a smart move.....the rabid Sydney fans got punched in the face by one of the fastest & brutal songs they have to offer. It wasn't long until the first crowd surfer kicked me in the back of the head whist I was in the photopit singing along
"I've got no more goddamn regrets...I've got no more goddamn respect" .....WHACK!
In what was a world first, FEAR FACTORY gave the FANS the chance to select the songs that they played....and the fans chose wisely!
"Shock", "Martyr", "Resurrection", "Replica"......plus the unveiling of the live version of "Anodized" from the latest album "Genexus" made for one of the best live shows that I have seen Fear Factory play over the years.
The Fear Factory sound is made for the live show. To FEEL the power of those double bass kicks in your chest.....this is how this music is meant to be heard. In all my years of seeing these guys live, the one thing that never wavers is the way that they deliver their music to the fans. Yes, it is not an overly flash production. A shitload of strobes & smoke machines (A photographers worst nightmare!!!) is about the extent of the "stage show", but the setlist & execution was second to none as usual. It is all about the music.
I guarantee all in attendance would have left the Roundhouse extremely satisfied. What a way to bring the curtain down on the Roundhouse that we all know & love!
